As Sudan’s war deepens, paramilitaries form a rival government — is a breakup coming?
Sudanese paramilitary forces (RSF) are establishing a parallel government, escalating the risk of Sudan's division. Following a 2021 coup and subsequent infighting with the army, the RSF now controls significant territory, particularly in the west. While the army maintains control in the north and has appointed its own government, the RSF's move towards establishing its own administration could lead to a territorial split similar to South Sudan's secession in 2011. The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread ethnic violence, famine, and displacement.
