Mobile library ignites reading passion in rural Sabah schools
Mobile libraries in Malaysia, particularly in rural areas like Kinabatangan and Tungku, are fostering reading habits among schoolchildren. Librarian Muhammad Said Maarop, a 20-year veteran, highlighted the service's impact, noting how children gravitate towards illustrated fiction. He shared an anecdote about a former pupil, Rosli, who became a teacher after frequently using the mobile library. The service, operating in Lahad Datu since 1997 with over 500 members, delivers books and reading materials to 24 schools, supplementing access in areas without permanent libraries. Maarop emphasized the importance of early reading engagement despite the rise of digital alternatives.
