Argus Residence: Celebrating the memories of a former Eurasian ‘enclave’ in George Town
Argus Lane in George Town, Penang, once a vibrant playground for Eurasian families in the mid-20th century, has been restored. 86-year-old Stan De Souza, a former resident, recalls his childhood spent in the row of five terraced houses owned by the Church of the Assumption. The houses, built in 1928, housed families like the De Souzas, Scullys, Newmans, and Cutters, forming a close-knit community. De Souza shared memories of WWII, attending St. Xavier's Institution, and the communal life in the lane. George Town Heritage Hotels (GTHH) has leased and restored the houses, now known as Argus Residence, an extension of Seven Terraces Hotel.
