Nancy Shukri warns of ‘alarming’ rise in domestic violence, divorce cases in Sarawak
Domestic violence and divorce rates are rising in Sarawak and nationwide, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. 7,116 domestic violence cases were reported nationally in 2024, up from 5,507 in 2023. In Sarawak, 1,124 Muslim couples divorced in 2024, primarily due to a lack of understanding. Minister Shukri stressed the need for education, guidance, and social support alongside legislation to address these issues. She highlighted ministry initiatives like pre-marriage courses and counselling, urging community involvement in strengthening families for a stable society.
