DPM: Malaysia studying nuclear energy potential with small modular reactors
Malaysia's Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) is conducting a feasibility study on nuclear energy, including small modular reactors (SMRs), to assess their viability as a stable power source. The study will focus on Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, addressing waste management, regulatory requirements, human capital development, safety, and public acceptance. Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized the need to ratify international treaties, including the 123 Agreement with the US, before any final decision. PETRA also plans to launch the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2026–2035 (NEEAP 2.0) by year-end.
