Barn owls: Silent guardian of oil palm plantations
In the 1980s, Ebor Research, Sime Darby Plantation's R&D arm, housed a beloved Spotted Wood Owl named Liza. Rescued as an owlet by researcher Chuah Joo Hor, Liza became a cherished member of the Ebor community, freely roaming the labs and the Seafield Estate. Tragically, a misunderstanding led to her being shot by an Auxiliary Police officer after a perceived attack on a child. Her death devastated the staff, particularly Research Director Brian Wood, leaving a void in the vibrant research center.
