Malaysia seeks clearer Brics membership path as Anwar meets Putin for key talks
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to clarify Malaysia's path to full BRICS membership. Currently a partner country, Malaysia seeks a clearer understanding of the transition process, as no defined mechanism exists. Ambassador Cheong Loon Lai stated this is a key discussion point for the leaders. While appreciating the partner status granted in January 2025, Malaysia aims for full membership within the bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE.
