Ivorian women fight FGM with reconstructive surgery
In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, 28 women, including midwife Adele Koue Sungbeu, underwent free clitoral reconstructive surgery after experiencing female genital mutilation (FGM). Sungbeu, while not experiencing physical difficulties, felt embarrassed by partners' reactions to her condition. The surgery, funded by the Muskoka Fund, aims to provide free access to this procedure, which can be costly. Another woman shared her experience of travelling to Burkina Faso and paying a significant amount for the surgery, only to be denied the procedure. The initiative also includes training for obstetricians.
