After lifting sanctions on Syria, Trump presses new leader to normalise ties with Israel
In a landmark meeting in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump met with Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, urging him to normalize relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords. Trump, alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (via video link), also requested Sharaa to expel Palestinian militants and foreign fighters, and manage ISIS prison camps currently held by Kurdish forces. Trump lifted US sanctions on Syria, aiming to aid reconstruction. While Syria welcomed the meeting and the lifting of sanctions, it made no mention of normalizing ties with Israel.
