551 licences issued since Gas Distribution (Amendment) Bill 2023 enforcement

Sarawak has issued 551 gas industry licenses since the Gas Distribution (Amendment) Bill 2023 came into effect. Deputy Minister for Utility Datuk Ibrahim Baki stated 14 licenses were for upstream operations and 537 for downstream, under the amended Distribution of Gas Ordinance (DGO) 2016. The ministry also issued 10 non-compliance notices to unlicensed operators. Seven license categories exist, covering import, regasification, processing, transportation, pipeline management, supply, and retail of gas. Operating without a license can result in fines up to RM20 million for the first offence and up to 10 times that amount for subsequent offences.
