Forestry Dept, French research centre to boost biodiversity in oil palm landscapes
The Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) have partnered on TRAILS 2, an agroforestry research project. This initiative aims to transform oil palm landscapes by integrating native tree species within plantations to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. The project, located at Melangking Oil Palm Plantation in Sukau, will assess the impact of these agroforestry systems on soil fertility, microclimate regulation, and wildlife habitat. The collaboration involves SFD, CIRAD, the Sabah Biodiversity Centre, the Department of Agriculture, and the Forest Research Centre Sepilok, ensuring alignment with local regulations and providing technical expertise.
