The Metals Company (TMC) CEO, Gerard Barron, is confident they will be the first to commercially mine deep-sea minerals, aiming to start within the next year with help from a Trump-era executive order. TMC bypassed the International Seabed Authority, applying directly to the US for a permit to mine polymetallic nodules in the Pacific's Clarion-Clipperton Zone. They have a production vessel ready and a process for extracting nickel, copper, cobalt, and manganese. Barron anticipates production sooner than expected.
