A 45-year-old lodging operator in Sibu, Malaysia, was fined RM50,000 for stealing electricity from Syarikat Sesco Berhad six years ago. Ting Siew King pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. Sesco discovered the theft during a raid in 2020, finding direct tapping wires on nine electricity meters. Ting, the registered owner and account holder, admitted to preventing accurate electricity consumption recording. He has since repaid RM95,812.56 in arrears. The judge considered his guilty plea and the fact the offense predated the 2023 amendment to the Electricity Ordinance, which increased penalties.
