Penang's tuna landing industry saw significant growth in 2024, with landings more than doubling to 431,000 kilograms (RM7.76 million) compared to 177,000 kilograms (RM3.19 million) in 2023. State executive councillor Fahmi Zainol highlighted the industry's potential for Penang to become a major tuna hub, serving both domestic and international markets. The state plans to improve infrastructure and is exploring new tuna landing port locations, despite challenges in finding suitable sites with sufficient land and sea depth. The industry is expected to boost the state's economy through job creation and related industries like high-tech tuna processing, with the potential for tourism development.
