Fadillah: Malaysia could go nuclear within 10 years, if public gives green light
Malaysia is exploring the feasibility of nuclear energy projects in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah to meet the growing demand for stable energy. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof highlighted the importance of locations near water sources for cooling systems. While Sarawak relies heavily on hydropower, the peninsula and Sabah depend on less clean gas and diesel. No final decisions have been made on technology, location, or capacity, with a comprehensive study underway. The study will consider technical aspects, safety, environmental impact, and financing, with implementation potentially within the next 10 years. The government is also investigating new technologies like small modular reactors (SMRs).
