Nationality is a right, not a favour, say women challenging Kuwait’s citizenship crackdown
Over 37,000 people, mostly women married to Kuwaitis, have had their citizenship revoked in Kuwait since August 2023. This mass revocation, part of Emir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad Al-Sabah's reformist agenda, aims to restrict nationality to those with blood ties, reshaping Kuwaiti identity and potentially influencing the electorate. One affected woman, Lama, discovered her revoked status after her credit card was declined. Analysts say while citizenship revocations aren't new, the scale is unprecedented, adding to Kuwait's existing stateless population, the Bidoon.
