Malaysian Prisons Dept marks 235 years, prioritises rehabilitation and reform for the future
Malaysia's Prisons Department is focusing on a Prison Reform Agenda for its 235th anniversary. The agenda aims to improve rehabilitation, management, and infrastructure, addressing overcrowding, aging facilities, outdated laws, and rehabilitation programs. Repurposed National Service camps now house inmates, and six older prisons are slated for replacement. The department is shifting towards a restorative justice approach, including a successful Parole System that has seen a low rate of recidivism.
