BMW has begun real-world testing of solid-state batteries in a prototype i7 electric sedan. BMW's test battery integrates their existing cell architecture with new module concepts, suggesting easy adaptation to future solid-state tech. Other automakers like Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and several Chinese companies are also developing solid-state battery technology. BMW has been collaborating with American start-up Solid Power since 2016.
