51 tonnes of trash have been removed from caves within Zhangjiajie National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hunan, China. Viral videos revealed the caves, which inspired scenery in the film Avatar, were being used as a dumping ground. The garbage, some dating back to 2010, accumulated after incineration was banned and before a new waste management system was implemented. Four officials have been suspended and twelve farms are under investigation for illegal wastewater discharge.
