In 2024, Malaysia reported 3,185 new HIV cases, with 75% affecting young people aged 20-39. Men accounted for 90% of these cases, a shift from the 1990s when they represented 99%. Transmission has also shifted from needle sharing to sexual transmission (96%), with heterosexual transmission accounting for 32% and homosexual/bisexual transmission for 64%. While new HIV infections decreased by 50% between 2000 and 2009, the decline has slowed to 27% since 2010.
