Sarawak's DID plans a series of vertical shafts and underground tunnels to act as reservoirs for excess rainwater, offering a sustainable solution to Miri's flood issues. This innovative approach, inspired by Western models, will collect and discharge water into rivers. DID is also utilizing existing sewerage tunnels as an alternative. Immediate measures include the Miri River Flood Mitigation Plan Phase 1, costing RM25.655 million, involving two pump stations. Phase 2, approved under the 12MP, will cover Pujut, Lopeng, and Taman Tunku, with a total scheme value of RM50 million.
