Reef Check Malaysia (RCM), along with local communities, removed 869 Crown-of-Thorns starfish from reefs near Bakungan Island, Semporna, in response to a concerning outbreak. These coral-eating starfish pose a significant threat to the reef ecosystem. RCM is mobilizing community teams for rapid response to new outbreaks and urging tour operators to adopt reef-friendly practices, like the Green Fins program, to minimize damage from activities such as anchoring. Makatagih Travel & Tours is the first snorkelling operator in Semporna to join Green Fins.
